Words of Encouragement

Enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise; give thanks to Him and praise His name.    Psalm 100:4 NIV

I am trying very hard to have a thankful attitude this week.  No it’s not Thanksgiving, it’s summer, but it’s okay to be thankful more than one week-end, really it is.  I decided to see how many things I take for granted (a lot).   I wanted to see how quickly I can type 10 blessings (very quickly).  I was curious to see how long it can take to form an attitude of thankfulness (much longer I am afraid).  Every day last week I started my day by thinking of 10 blessings instead of making my mental list of all that I had to accomplish that day.  What a way to lift a discouraged mood and make your heart sing!  I have a four minute ride to work (yes, that is a blessing) and that is just long enough to sing the old hymn “Count Your Blessings.”  Here are the first ten from the first day.

1.  It is only a few steps to get fresh water, directly from the tap, one of eight taps in my house if you count the outdoor one.

2.  My fridge is full of food, my pantry is full, my freezer is full, and my stomach is full. (Does that count as four)?

3.  I have a warm and cozy home and a comfy bed to sleep in. (I think that is two)!

4.  I have a car to drive and I can go safely go pretty much anywhere I please. (Ha ha two again).

5.  My children were picked up for school by the school bus at our driveway and delivered back home at the end of the day.

6.  My children were immunized against many diseases by our health care system.

7.  When my husband was ill, he received amazing emergency services just a few minutes from our home.

8.  I can worship any way I please without worry or concern of being in any danger.

9.  Four beautiful children (okay, so that is four).

10.  Family and friends all around me (I seem to be coming up with multiples of blessings, but then again, that is what blessings do).

11.  Taxes.  (I knew that would mess your minds up but really think about that one).

Oops, that is eleven, see how they multiply!  The blessings we take for granted like the water from our tap and the shoes on our feet may be huge blessings for others elsewhere on our planet.  The following are the words to Count Your Blessings.  The tune is contagious.  Once you get it in your head, you cannot get it out, but it is a great one to get stuck in your head.  Okay people, think of ten blessings  – quick, fast!  Add to your list each day and see the multiples of blessings.  Then don’t forget to thank God for His goodness!  Do it now; do it often; make it a habit  “and it will surprise you what the Lord has done!”

Always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.  Ephesians 5:20  NIV

When upon life’s billows you are tempest tossed,
When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost,
Count your many blessings, name them one by one,
And it will surprise you what the Lord has done.

Count your blessings …

Are you ever burdened with a load of care?
Does the cross seem heavy you are called to bear?
Count your many blessings, every doubt will fly,
And you will keep singing as the days go by.

Count your blessings …

When you look at others with their lands and gold,
Think that Christ has promised you His wealth untold;
Count your many blessings. Wealth can never buy
Your reward in heaven, nor your home on high.

Count your blessings …

So, amid the conflict whether great or small,
Do not be discouraged, God is over all;
Count your many blessings, angels will attend,
Help and comfort give you to your journey’s end.

Count your blessings, name them one by one,
Count your blessings, see what God has done!
Count your blessings, name them one by one,
Count your many blessings, see what God has done!
